Book Binge Review Round Up

It's been one of those months where I have binged on reading and need to catch up on the reviews. This post will contain reviews for five books that I've finished within the last couple of weeks. All books were via Netgalley. The reviews are my opinions. There was no compensation for any of the reviews in this post. Hope you enjoy!

I glance at my wife as she climbs into the passenger seat, and I am bursting with confidence. Today will be everything I’ve promised her…and more…

Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he's promised today will be the best day ever.

But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?

Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion. In the bestselling, page-turning vein of The Couple Next Door and The Dinner, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

Paul Storm is an a**hole. Literally. This man is going to get under your skin before you even finish the first chapter.

Best Day Ever follows Paul and his wife, as he takes her on a romantic getaway. Little things keep happening throughout the trip to make Paul's faith in it being the best day waver, but he doesn't once deviate from the overall plan.

A carefully crafted story that has you wanting to read into the late hours of the night. Twists and turns that you won't see coming and the life of a man unraveling one thread at a time.

Monster in the Closet reunites readers with characters from Karen Rose's bestselling Baltimore series.

A mother is dead, and now her killer hunts the child that witnessed the brutal crime...

Private Investigator Clay Maynard locates missing children for clients, but has nearly given up hope of finding his own daughter, cruelly stolen from him by his ex-wife twenty-three years ago.

Equine therapist Taylor Dawson has chosen to intern at Daphne Montgomery-Carter's stables so that she can observe the program's security director - her father, Clay Maynard. Trying to reconcile the wonderful man she's getting to know with the monster her mother always described, Taylor never expects to become the target of a real monster, the man who murdered the mother of the little girls she works with at the stable. Neither does she expect to fall for Ford Elkhart, Daphne's handsome son, who is dealing with his own demons. As family and friends gather for a wedding, Taylor starts to imagine a permanent life in Baltimore.

But not if the real monster gets to her first...

I absolutely loved this book. Karen Rose is an author that I discovered a couple years ago. The opportunity to review this title was very much appreciated.

The author does an amazing job of weaving three story lines together. While each character is dealing with their own issues, the overlaps are flawless and very engaging.

The stand out character in this book is litter Cordelia. She was my absolute favorite and I would have loved to have seen more of her spunk throughout the book.

If you're looking for an engaging book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then look no farther. Monster in the Closet is a great way to spend the weekend.

In a suspense thriller to rival Paula Hawkins and Tana French, a detective with secrets of her own hunts the killer of a woman who was the glamorous star of their high school.

Rose was lit by the sun, her beautiful face giving nothing away. Even back then, she was a mystery that I wanted to solve.

The lead homicide investigator in a rural town, Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock is deeply unnerved when a high school classmate is found strangled, her body floating in a lake. And not just any classmate, but Rosalind Ryan, whose beauty and inscrutability exerted a magnetic pull on Smithson High School, first during Rosalind's student years and then again when she returned to teach drama.

As much as Rosalind's life was a mystery to Gemma when they were students together, her death presents even more of a puzzle. What made Rosalind quit her teaching job in Sydney and return to her hometown? Why did she live in a small, run-down apartment when her father was one of the town's richest men? And despite her many admirers, did anyone in the town truly know her?

Rosalind's enigmas frustrate and obsess Gemma, who has her own dangerous secrets—an affair with her colleague and past tragedies that may not stay in the past.

This book was an engaging read. There were some aspects that seemed a little slow moving, but the overall story and plot were worth it.

The story follows a self destructive detective.  Gemma has had so much lose in her life that she just coasts through. Not really living, but living enough to muck up not only her life, but the life of those around her as well.

The case itself will have you guessing until the end.

Sometimes the truth is darker than fiction.

Liza Jones has thirty days to write the thriller that could put her back on the bestseller list. In the meantime, she’s struggling to start a family with her husband, who is distracted by the disappearance of his best friend, Nick. With stresses weighing down in both her professional and her personal life, Liza escapes into writing her latest heroine.

Beth is a new mother who suspects her husband is cheating on her while she’s home alone providing for their newborn. Angry and betrayed, Beth sets out to catch him in the act and make him pay for shattering the illusion of their perfect life. But before she realizes it, she’s tossing the body of her husband’s mistress into the river.

Then the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur. Nick’s body is dragged from the Hudson and Liza’s husband is arrested for his murder. Before her deadline is up, Liza will have to face up to the truths about the people around her, including herself. If she doesn’t, the end of her heroine’s story could be the end of her own.

This was a great book. The author did a fantastic job of weaving a story within a story.

Liza is struggling. While her debut novel was a best seller, her later work has come nowhere near the list. Mediocre at best, she is now under the gun to produce a thriller that will hopefully put her back into a good earning state. All the while she is supposed to be sympathizing with her husband, whose business partner and best friend has gone missing.

While Liza tries to navigate the chaos that is her life right now the lines start to blur. Between migraines and the side effects of the hormones she starts to lose some touch with reality.  Once Nick's body is found the lines start to blur even more.

A gut clenching edge of your seat story that will have you guessing until the end.

Seven-year-old Tony has one choice…to live or to die.

My name is Tony.

When I was seven years old the bullies in my class almost killed me; my father was angry that I let it happen but he always hated me.

At thirteen I went to prison for a crime I didn’t commit; it was the worst experience of my life.

Living on the streets was hard; being part of a gang was harder.

Oh, and I did find people to love along the way…and, I would do anything to protect them. Anything.

Please head the warning that comes with the book. Tony goes through a lot of sh*t throughout the story.

Reading this book broke a part of me and somehow put me back together again. To ready what young Tony has to go through is heartbreaking.

Throughout the story you read about the vile acts that are committed against and to this young man. A young man that only wants to be loved and accepted. That love and acceptance doesn't come easy for him though. He has to fight for everything he has and then watch as he loses most along the way.

A must read book if you are truly ok with difficult subject matter.
