Maya Bellegarde has spent her entire life searching for a way to break the curse hanging over her and her People. As part of her quest, she volunteers to investigate an anomalous burial at a Swedish archaeological dig where a rare cache of documents has been discovered side by side with an ancient symbol linked to the Seven Sisters, the progenitors of the People.
While in Sweden, Maya meets James Terhune, an attractive archaic language expert, and invites him to take on a position at the Institute for Early Cultural Studies, the People's main historical research branch. James is thrilled by the opportunity Maya extends and intrigued by the attraction he feels for her. He soon begins to suspect, however, that the secrets of the grave are minor compared to the secrets Maya holds, secrets that could hamper their burgeoning relationship and cripple the work they've undertaken for the IECS.
The People aren't the only ones interested in the newly-discovered documents. An ancient enemy of the People resurfaces, threatening the lives of Maya and James' loved ones, and setting in motion a chain of events that could save the People, or destroy them.

Jerusha whirled around, another angry retort at the ready. Drew was standing right behind her, so close she nearly flinched back. How the hell had he gotten that close without her hearing him or at least without him setting off her internal alarms?
He wrapped his hands around her upper arms and yanked her close, and dropped his voice to a low murmur. “Helluva temper you got there, Jaybird.”
She curled her lips into a smirk. “Helluva crap argument, if you ask me. You couldn’t come up with a better scenario?”
“I was working on the fly. You got into it well enough.”
“What can I say? I like yelling at you.”
“Yeah, I figured.” He lowered his head and brushed his mouth across hers. “Mmm. You sure you’re ok with this?”
“It’s just a kiss, Drew, and besides. It’ll be more convincing.”
“Yeah.” His hands tightened on her arms and he inched her closer, molding their bodies together. “Hold on to your knickers, baby.”
She meant to snicker, meant to make light of his phrasing. His mouth came down on hers, claiming her in a gentle kiss, and her humor died as quickly as it had risen. His lips moved over hers, coaxing her into a response, and she gave it to him, opening her mouth, sweeping her tongue across his, tangling her fingers in his jacket and holding him as close as he held her. Heat swept through her in a blazing rush of light and flame, and she rose on her tiptoes, aligning their bodies together in a perfect melding of male and female.
He yanked back, his breath harsh, and stared at her, his cognac eyes hot. “Jaybird,” he whispered, and then his mouth was on her again, demanding and hard, his rough need a welcome relief. Oh, she’d missed this, missed kissing a man, missed feeding his need with her own, and Drew was so perfect, so good. He sucked her lower lip into his mouth, scraped his tongue across hers, and she moaned, melting into his solid strength.
Quiet footsteps came from behind her, and Jerusha nearly cursed. Right. They were reeling in their tail, trying to gain information. Making out was just a fringe bene, not the main event.
